General information on the implementation of the REACH Regulation
(EC 1907/2006) at Georgsmarienhütte GmbH

The European Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (EC 1907/2006) came into force on 1 June 2007.

The Regulation is aimed at manufacturers or importers who manufacture or import substances on a scale of one tonne or more.

The central point of the REACH Regulation is the obligation to register substances with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki.
"No data, no market" is the message in the REACH Regulation. This means that manufacture or importation of substances is prohibited from 2 December 2008 unless pre-registration takes place in the proper manner.

Substance users designated as "downstream users" must ensure that their use is included when the substance(s) is/are registered. The REACH Regulation, therefore, lays down certain obligations to share information along the supply chain, both from the supplier to the customer and from the customer to the supplier.

Metals and metal alloys such as steel and ferrous slag and other subsidiary products from iron and steel production come under the regime of the REACH Regulation.

Wastes are not a subject of the Regulation.

The registration of substances takes place in 2 stages - pre-registration and registration - both of which the manufacturers or importers are required to do.

Pre-registration concerns, without restriction, manufactured and imported substances including intermediate products that are manufactured or imported on a scale of at least one tonne. Excluded are solely the substances stated in Annexes IV and V.

Pre-registration begins on 1 June 2008 and ends on 1 December 2008. The European Chemicals Agency will then publish a list of all the pre-registered substances on its website by 1 January 2009.

Once pre-registration has taken place, registration will then be necessary by 1.12.2010, 1.12.2013 or 1.12.2018, depending on the tonnage produced.

For this purpose, minimum information will be compiled in a "Technical Dossier“ and sent to the ECHA.

Georgsmarienhütte GmbH intends to comply with its obligation as a manufacturer of preparations within the meaning of REACH.

Short general details regarding the use of our preparations are being compiled in the "Technical Dossier“ in as far as these are known to us. These details will be sent on to our customers to verify your uses. We would request, beforehand, refraining from reporting your use as our customer.

To manufacture our products we also need substances and preparations from other manufacturers. Where necessary we will contact our suppliers to ensure that our use is included in the registration.
